Once my daughter hit 3 years she adopted a VERY strong sense of self and LOVED to assert herself by saying
“no!!”. A difficult but necessary phase.
The power struggle between us was real but it also drove me to learn how to subvert and respect her opposition strategically. This book taught me that, I had to see her opposition as her striving for independence, she needed the physical freedom to go about her way in a warm, neatly confined space where everything she needed was provided. Her trying to build herself and adapt herself in her natural state was in fact a fundamental need.
This was what informed so much of my Montessori style care.
The uniqueness of a child’s development is closely connected to a prepared environment where they can meaningfully move around. In other words, a child’s movement should be purposeful where they go about their work uninterrupted while caring for their environment.
